Creative Concepts : Organizing across digital platforms
We can broadcast from our living rooms, 24/7. The micro and macro have flattened to the shape of our screens, and the ever widening reliance on tech tools obliterates many organizing constraints: time, geography, coordination.
As a result, I've pushed much of my professional development work online, rather than in person at conferences. Projects like the Talking Color workshop started as a traditional 85 minute conference workshop and has since morphed into a Talking Color Google Classroom with 70 on-going participants. I extended the reach with a one hour pilot podcast, live streamed. Instead of a one time 85 minutes of engagement, I now have on demand capacity to connect.
Furthermore, social media trends cycle rapidly, as do the platforms and apps we view them on. Recent events of racial violence and unrest create an urgency to connect our educators to resources, and to build community with each other. Likewise, the need to push back against public sentiment in order to protect educators during the pandemic presented a social media challenge. Would an organized internal effort built on the social media capital of our members be a possible organizing tool? The emergence of new communication technologies presents opportunities to rethink form and function in our communications and operations.
